Not a big fan of modern art .. Subtlety , I believe , should be more direct. :P

clubbing it all together as modern is doing some artists a lot of favor and others a lot of disfavor - dont you think?

Sure , true . Some are gifted with a better flair for expression than others.But its difficult to hunt them out in the jamboree.

isnt is quite the same in everything - in the age of google, blogs and wikipedia - the situation (actually the problem) has got so amplified - finding the real gem in the jamboree ;)

i usually enjoy a painting -
if it has got it's colors right
if it is not preaching anything to me (suggestion is fine)
if it has got a sense of proportion
and if it not picasso.
