about Leonardo da Vinci...

...Then the king, who used often and lovingly to visit him, came in, and he, raising himself respectfully to sit up in bed, spoke of his sickness,

and how he had offended God and man by not working at his art as he ought.

Then there came a paroxysm, a forerunner of death, and the king raised him and lifted his head to help him and lessen the pain, whereupon his spirit, knowing it could have no greater honor, passed away in the king's arms in the seventy-fifth year of his age.

From Giorgio Vasari: "Life of Leonardo da Vinci", in Lives of the Most Eminent Painters, Sculptors, and Architects

Often this is mis-constructed to be Da Vinci's last words -

I have offended God and mankind because my work did not reach the quality it should have." (eg. here)

yeah but sad isnt it? what a thought to die with.

i was so amazed by the fact that it was da vinci who said it that i searched it up and found that it wasnt him. i wonder tho if he did agree with the king. Do you think it is obvious that da vinci agreed?

Da Vinci had nothing to be ashamed of.

Except maybe the insane success of The Da Vinci Code.

Umm, I would like to meet da Vinci and ask him that (did he agree with the king). Do you think I will find him in heaven? hell?

Ok the deal is if i die before you do and see da vinci, i will write a comment on your blog - else you can write one on mine.

(i am ofcourse assuming you all are alive and kicking now.)

If you comment on my blog from the afterlife I hope you also tell me what the weather is like there, if they have weather, so I know what to wear.

By the by, Leonardo was also my favorite ninja turtle. What a great world we live in where people can imagine turtles that become ninjas...
